Multiscale Mass-Spring Model for High-Rate Compression of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Foams

چکیده
We present a one-dimensional, multiscale mass-spring model to describe the response of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) foams subjected to uniaxial, high-rate compressive deformations. The model uses mesoscopic dissipative spring elements composed of a lower level chain of asymmetric, bilateral, bistable elastic springs to describe the experimentally observed deformation-dependent stress–strain responses. The model shows an excellent agreement with the experimental response of VACNT foams undergoing finite deformations and enables in situ identification of the constitutive parameters at the smaller lengthscales. We apply the model to two cases of VACNT foams impacted at 1.75 ms 1 and 4.44 ms 1 and describe their dynamic response. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4028785]

Multiscale mass-spring models of carbon nanotube foams
This article is concerned with the mechanical properties of dense, vertically aligned carbon nanotube foams subject to one-dimensional compressive loading. We develop a discrete model directly inspired by the micromechanical response reported experimentally for CNT foams, where infinitesimal portions of the tubes are represented by collections of uniform bi-stable springs. Under cyclic loading,...

In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...
متن کاملRate-sensitive strain localization and impact response of carbon nanotube foams with microscale heterogeneous bands
We describe the deformation mechanisms and the bulk dynamic response of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) foams comprised of bands of different densities. The densities of the bands are controlled during synthesis by varying the flow-rate of gas feedstock in discrete steps. We show that the impact response of VACNT foams can be distinctively tailored by introducing heterogeneous bands....
متن کاملOptimized Conditions for Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes
Here, we have synthesized vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs), using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Cobalt and ethanol are used as the catalyst and the carbon source, respectively. The effects of ethanol flow rate, thickness of Co catalyst film, and growth time on the properties of the carbon nanotube growth are investigated. The results show that the flow rate of ethanol and...
متن کاملSuper-compressible foamlike carbon nanotube films.
We report that freestanding films of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes exhibit super-compressible foamlike behavior. Under compression, the nanotubes collectively form zigzag buckles that can fully unfold to their original length upon load release. Compared with conventional low-density flexible foams, the nanotube films show much higher compressive strength, recovery rate, and sag factor, an...
